Mariner 3 was NASA’s first attempt to reach Mars in 1964. (Around the same time as Martin Luther King and Malcolm X and the Vietnam war). Sometimes we get so obsessed with distant things that we forget the centrally important things close to home...or maybe looking up is a legitimate and unifying distraction?

Reeds are so much more than the sticky grass things lining our wetlands, throughout history reeds have been used to make paper, boats, provide energy to burn, an integral part of woodwind instruments, thatching for fences and roofs, and as a method of removing contaminants from grey water. A fresh look reveals hidden beauty.

RENOVATIONS
Acrylic on canvas.
1020mm x 750mm
It seems a little odd to me that people delight in repairing all kinds of broken things except for other people. So much of renovating is about covering up what fashion dictates as no longer of value. The truth however is that true value and purpose can only be revealed when we carefully scrape back the trends and surface cover ups. The best renovations take place at the hands of the owner.

SPIN EFFECTS
Acrylic on canvas
1010 x 1530mm
Spinifex is a tough, spiky grass that dominates much of the desert of Central Australia. The way Spinifex thrives on the poorest, most arid soils of the desert is by way of deep roots. Generally the roots develop from the same nodes as the shoots so that each shoot has its own personal water supply. It’s not the most famous or even the most attractive plant, but it is Spinifex that has prevented our deserts from becoming a Sahara-like world of bare, shifting sand.
